In the olden days, left-wing people used to like working-class people.
Lots of left-wing people used to be working-class people. These people were known as socialists and joined trade unions.
Sometimes working-class people used to frighten left-wing people, but they pretended that they weren’t frightened and were nice to them.
Left-wing people supported working-class people, gave them money, sat in rooms with them and wore badges to show that they cared more than right-wing people, who wore ties instead of badges and didn’t care.

Nowadays
Nowadays, working-class people are bored with socialism because it hasn’t made them rich and happy.
Nowadays left-wing people are middle-class people. Working class people are a big disappointment to left-wing people.
Left wing people now think that working class people are:
a) Simple and easily led
b) Un-enlightened and susceptible to short-term pleasures
c) Terribly sad and struggling, unable to cope on their own
d) All of the above
Education Is A Life-long Task
Left-wing people think that working-class people are unable to think for themselves and require life-long education to help them make informed decisions.
Left-wing people work tirelessly on education programmes to encourage working class people to buy expensive food and clothes and not cheap food and clothes. They are disappointed that working-class people are un-ethical.
Working-class people like to drink alcohol and have sex. They do not understand that these activities are dangerous and need continuous education from left-wing people.
Working-class people need to be protected from newspapers, even though they don’t read them anymore. They are easily influenced and their happy-go-lucky ways can be turned into bigoted nasty ways. Left-wing people are needed to help them use Facebook carefully and not make mistakes.
Left-wing People Like To Be Sad and Unhappy
Many left-wing people have a very nice life, but they like to be sad. To help with this, they choose to be sad for other people. Sometimes these people are far away and sometimes they are nearby, but different to them.
In the olden days, left-wing people tried to make it better for other people. Nowadays, they like to protect them by being offended when a working-class person person doesn’t behave properly.
Left-wing people like to help other people by being offended on their behalf. This means that the other people can carry on with their lives and the left-wing people do all the work. This isn’t really fair, but the left-wing people seem to carry on doing it, so they must enjoy it. Despite all this effort left-wing people are still very sad.
Left-wing People Care More Than Other People
Left-wing people care so much that they love the whole entire planet. Other people don’t care about the planet, they only care about themselves and other people that they know. This means that left-wing people have to love the planet even more, even more than they actually like other people.
Left-wing people show that they care by telling other people about how much they care. They send special “I care” signals to other people. Forwarding videos on Facebook is one way that they can show how much they care. The videos often show people far away who are living miserable lives, but pictures of cute fluffy chickens in nasty factories are considered sufficient.
Left-wing activists (see below) are very helpful. They make lots of “I care” videos which makes it quick and easy for left-wing people to send their “signals”. They do this several times throughout each day when they are not busy.
Sometimes Left-wing People Are Made Angry By Other People
Left-wing people care so much, it makes them hate people who don’t show that they care. These people are right-wing people. Left-wing people have given them a name, it is “Tory scum” or “Brexit racist”. Left-wing people like to shout at the right-wing people and tell them that they are scum, even when they aren’t listening.
Shouting at the Tories is another way to show that they care. Caring is very important to left-wing people.
Left-wing people care so deeply that they don’t have time for thinking and convincing. They use their precious time for shouting about caring.
Also, working-class people don’t know what left-wing people are saying, so it is helpful when they point to the right-wing people and shout “scum”. They think that working-class people do understand shouting and caring.
If you have observed someone and you are not sure if they are a left-wing person, seek their opinion on “the Tories” or “Brexit”. If they start to shout and care, they are left-wing.
Left-wing Activists Are Helpful
Left-wing activists are left-wing people who have an internet connection. They make the internet very loud.
Left-wing activists help other people care on the internet. They are very helpful in pointing out when people have forgotten to show that they care. They help people in many ways – watching videos, commenting on things and clicking on buttons called “start a petition”. Left-wing activists sometimes go outside their houses and meet other left-wing people and they care together and shout at the Tory scum.
Left-wing People Are Funny
Left-wing people have “enlightened comedians” who make jokes on “panel games”. These are broadcast on the television and BBC Radio 4.
The enlightened comedians make people laugh at right-wing people, whom they consider stupid. In the olden days, comedians made jokes about Irish people, but these comedians weren’t clever like the enlightened comedians.
Instead of the Irish people, the enlightened comedians make jokes about working-class people. Because they care, they use special words like “Glaswegians”, “Sun readers” and “UKIP supporters”, so the working-class people will not notice.
Working-class people do funny things like drinking Monster energy drinks, eating Haribos and watching television. This is funny and the enlightened comedians are helpful because they point at them and laugh, so we know who to laugh at as well. It is very funny and we all laugh because we are en-lightened too.
Further Reading – George Orwell
In the 1930’s George Orwell wrote about the left-wing people he knew in “The Road to Wigan Pier”. It is very funny.
Superb work there. If you didn’t see it on Twitter, Toby Young is interested in talking to you. He is @Toadmeister if you want to try and get in touch.

Where are the Lady Bird illustrations? No Lady Bird book is complete without them!

Sadly the illustrations, this entire publication and indeed the entire Ladybird series of books were banned by ‘Left-Wing People’ not long after going to press on the grounds that:
1. ‘Lady’ is too gender-specific which may cause offence to non-gender/gender-neutral/gender-opposite types.
2. ‘Lady’ as a reference to a gender specific category is insufficiently working class which may cause offence to working class types.
3. ‘Bird’ is a derogatory term used by working class types in reference to a gender specific category and may cause offence to left-wing members of that gender specific category.
4. Any illustrations, no matter the subject depicted, may be offensive to someone, somewhere and therefore are not allowed on discrimination grounds and the right of everyone, everywhere to by suitably offended on behalf of someone else.
(Historical note: Images using non-gender/race/species specific stick figures were briefly considered just prior to the banning order but were rejected on the grounds that an as yet undiscovered tribe of non-gender/race/species specific working class types may be discovered in some as yet unexplored corner of the Brazilian Rain Forest at some indeterminable point in the future and therefore the Left Wing People felt suitable justified in being offended on their behalf)

Leftard comics always seem to stretch a point to absurdity in the absence of actual fact. Example: “What will the Tories do next? I suppose they’ll make disabled mothers sell off their children’s body parts so they can afford half a packet of crisps.” Natch.

This isn’t a new idea, but it’s well-put and vigorous. We see much the same here in the US. I work at a psychiatric hospital, where one sector of the staff is quite leftist, and keeps saying things that offend another sector of the staff, who have to sit silent and endure it.

Doesn’t that photograph in the post of that man who is called Mark Thomas, and whom the BBC thinks is a comedian, look very stern and angry. He is clearly a left wing person. As well as being unfunny.

Left wing people of which I consider myself as one,do more than care.In fact caring is for the so called do-gooders of society who see charity as he best way to help poor working class people. However,Left wingers want to change the whole basis of society based on equality and social justice.

I can see some truth in most of this but your misunderstanding of the incredibly complex Spanish Civil War is stupid and ruins the article. There was a lot more at play there and comparing the left-wing Catalans and the left-wing Russians as if they were the part of the same homogeneous group and had the same interests is simply not true. Furthermore, I don’t know if it really helps your case to compare the UK Conservative Party to actual Spanish fascists in the way that you did.

Hi John.
I was hoping to encourage people to read the two most important books written by Orwell, “Road to Wigan Pier” and “Homage to Catalonia”.
“Road to Wigan Pier” because the second part is a withering critique of the clueless socialists in the 1930s, which show a surprising similarity to today’s.
Regarding “Homage to Catalonia”. I take your point that the Communist Party’s defeat of a working-class revolution isn’t really analogous. I just want people to read the book and not to draw the wrong conclusions from “1984” and “Animal Farm”

So, what about left wing working class people? Or is it just certain classes of people who are capable of left wing thought? Also, the reference to Homage to Catalonia? Simplistic bordering on stupidity.
I get that there is a large amount of middle class virtue signalling but to dismiss the left in this way – particularly with such broad brush strokes – does nothingfor the working class.
My grandfather fought in Spain. Lorry driver. Joined the army to fight Hitler after that and fought all the way from Africa to France. He always said he’d do it all again because he believed it was right. You diminish his memory.
The whole piece looks like it was written by some dreary middle class wannabe comedian to be honest.

Lol – virtue signalling by someone whose grand daddy was a lorry driver. And you? Probably support Assad the butcher and Ghaddafi the quasi-fascist and Putin is your hero. We know how you regressive lefties are congenitally stupid, and your post attests to that.

Thanks for trying to educate me. An unskilled working class guy. I obviously misunderstood Orwell’s book when I read it. Also, my grandfather was a fool to fight in Spain. Being simply a lorry driver he was too stupid to know that he was being led by the nose.

Hi Phil, I think you’ve misunderstood the point. The left used to be progressive and now they hold the working class in contempt. Look at the hysterical response to the Brexit vote. Perhaps the best book to recommend is Orwell’s ‘Road to Wigan Pier’. As you know, he shows up the pretentious ‘left’ for what they are.

From what I remember from the mid 70’s when I worked at the Doncaster rail way yard as a boilermaker is that the union representatives sold out to the management. The shop stewards were only interested in getting an easy life. They betrayed us ever since. Then that evil which Maggie Thatcher pushed the British working family man into an unsustainable state of dept of which we will never recover. The Labor party is the new Tory party who will sell you to the highest bidder. Jerry Corbyn is in some kind of fairy tale and is unable to notice it.

Nicely put, but there are few things I’d like to say to those who have posted comments about being left wing and working class.
I am myself working class and sadly there has always been those of my class who have aspired to be middle class and who take on the ideals and language of the middle, this doesn’t make you middle class and never will, the reasons for this desire to ape the middle classes is down to their own hatred of how the middle sees them.
It is possible to be working class and hold left wings views and right wing views or any politcal view at all, what it is not possible to do is climb your class roots to nestle snuggly in the thick comfy fronds of the middle and upper classes but, what you can do is try to appear more enlightened than your peers and some do this by parroting back the words of higher classes who tell them that anybody who disagrees is an idiot, and as they (working class people) are self hating and ashamed of their roots they buy into this because it’s just reinforcing their own self hatred.

What a depressingly rigid and mechanistic view of humanity. Many of the left wing middle and upper class lefties satirised in the article will have working class backgrounds and frequently trumpet that proudly. Doesn’t make them personally working class. Their social class has changed from childhood to adulthood whether they pretend it hasn’t or not. Yours too I strongly suspect despite your assertion. Social mobility, both ways, over generations and within families is a fact whether you like it or not.

Social mobility is not possible beyond a certain point, regardless of how educated someone is and if the point of mobility is hampered by those above then it has become arrested.
